I have a BA in Journalism, and writing has always been my strong suite, so you can imagine my shock at the horrendous results I got on a spelling test at a recruiting agency.

If you’re like me and you are highly dependent on spell-check, then there are probably a lot of words that you have no idea that you can’t spell correctly.

Take a gander at some of the words that didn’t make sense to me, but turns out, (in the words of Tupac) that’s just the way it is….

‘I‘ is always before ‘E’ EXCEPT after ‘C’ right?  WRONG! —> Most of the time, not always:

Violations of the ‘I before E except after C’ law:

–       Achieve
–       Seize
–       Science

-ent/-ence/-ently/-ery/-etly NOT –ant/-ance/-antly/-ary/-atly

–       Apparently
–       Incompetent
–       Respondent
–       Fraudulent
–       Negligence
–       Argument
–       Cemetery
–       Existence
–       Independent
–       Occurrence
–       Immediately
–       Persistent
–       Tendency
–       Unfortunately
–       Inconsistent

–ant/–ance/-ar /-ally  NOT   –ent/-ence/-er/-elly

–       Appearance
–       Appellant
–       Calendar
–       Defendant
–       Incidentally
–       Resistance
–       Embarrass – 2 Rs and 2 Ss

-Asy not –Acy

– Idiosyncrasy
– Ecstasy

-or NOT –er
– Counselor

Know the difference between:

-Principle: a general rule or rule of behavior
-Principal: first, chief or most important/ the principal of a school

-Defence: a defending party in a court of law; the facts used by a defendant
-Defense: resistance against attack

-Dependant: a person who relies on another for support (noun)
-Dependent: something that relies on something else (adjective, verb)

-Practice: a professional business; preparation; habit (noun form)
-Practise: train; work repeatedly at something to become proficient; practice (verb form)

P.S. a small round of applause for my blog’s 100th post. I got a special treat coming soon.
